Expats thoughts about the election and political stability in Ecuador. April 2017.

from ExpatExchange Ecuador forum
Question: Anybody living in Ecuador currently have thoughts about the election? About political stability in Ecuador in general?

Opinion one: The election and the runoff election are over and depending on which side of the political fence you are on, your party either narrowly achieved victory or was robbed by election fraud. Sound familiar ?
Yes, the right wing opposition still has people in the streets in certain cities, protesting the vote count, as I write and governing socialist party has some of their people celebrating. But by and large, is spite of what certain news outlets would like to make it, life goes on and everyone is pretty much back to their daily routines.
In spite of the hype and hypocrisies, folks here are pretty pragmatic. Yes, we're going through a rough patch economically, but nothing compared to the poor folks in Venezuela, Brazil, or Bolivia. No matter who won, the world wasn't going to come to an end.
I guess most people not living here or some newcomers may be concerned how the election and its aftermath will affect them. I really don't see where it will have any appreciable influence.
My wife and her family are very involved in politics - and were, like the country, pretty evenly divided between Moreno and Lasso - which made for some very lively family get togethers !
Personally, I felt better about voting down here, than I did in last fall's U.S. elections.

Opinion two: For those worried about Lenin Moreno continuing along the Correa Calle, I think people will be in for a surprise. He's a lot less divisive, more willing to listen, and I think, poco a poco you will see some of the ladrones and party hack being replaced as he quietly implements his own agenda - not business as usual. I also think relations with the U.S. will improve - provided the Trump government is open to it. ( That of course is a big IF ).

Opinion three: no decision yet.. because there is fraud asserted by lasso... things are calm but the people are not happy that at 95% of the vote lasso was ahead.. and suddenly the website of the CNE election website when down for 20 mins.. and when it came back up.. the ip address was outside of ecuador and was not the same ip that was 20 mins before... and suddenly moreno was ahead.. of course there is the video where the CNE employ was shown taking a piece of scotch tape and lifting handwritten votes off the paper vote and then writing him moreno... and so the CNE has not sent a memo formally giving anyone the nod.. but moreno of course says he won... but it is all disputed..

The post- election drama continues in Ecuador. April 2017. Quito, Ecuador.

Election day, second round, was on Sunday, April 2.
Two candidates, one who represents current regime, Lenín Voltaire Moreno, has 51.16% of votes counted (99.73%) and another, Guillermo Lasso, who promises "change" has 48.84%.
Today is April, 5th and president-elect still not formally announced, although Lenín Moreno declared to Teleamazonas journalist: ' I am the elected President of the Ecuadorians. Do not treat me as a candidate in your media"

However, many in Ecuador disagree.

2017 Presidential Election Polls in Ecuador - anecdotal evidence. March 2017.

During month of March I carried out my own poll, asking random people in Quito who is their Presidential candidate, for whom they'll vote in coming elections. I would never ask this question in US, but here in Ecuador, in my opinion, people are more easy going, they didn't mind my question.
Here are my results. I grouped them as I could.
Taxi drivers: 11 of them, one said that he'll vote for Lenin, one was undecided, nine - for Lasso.
Small business owners: 6 shopkeepers polled, one will vote for Lenin, five for Lasso
Concierges: 2 of them, one for Lenin, one for Lasso.
My neighbors:  8 of them, one will null his vote, two for Lenin and five for Lasso.

My anecdotal statistics:
Total participants: 27  (100%)
undecided:           1  appr  3.5%
null vote:              1  appr  3.5%
Lenin:                   5 appr  19%
Lasso:                  20 appr 74%

Election day, second round, is on Sunday, April 2.

"Ugly Gringos" in Ecuador. Quito March 2017.

Once in a while gringos write articles about "ugly" gringos in Ecuador, shaming Norteamericanos for their bad behavior.
Quotes from countless articles about ugly gringos in Ecuador:
"Ugly Gringo Stay Away"
"Don’t come here and screw up my little corner of the world"
"unfavorable impact of the Ugly Gringo"
Ugly gringos have thousand sins (again, quotes from articles and posts written by others gringos in Ecuador):
complaining loudly,
generally upsetting the staff with an overbearing attitude,
speaking loudly enough for everyone to hear about how this and that was wrong with Ecuador,
they don't attempt to learn the language and stick to their own kind,
they live in those $200-300 grand mansions, in gated communities, right in front of cardboard hovels,
they brag about their $10,000 couches that they paid thousands and more to send down here,
they can't leave a nickel tip in the cheap restaurants----any restaurant,
they are giving money to children and its socially inappropriate
they are being "generous to these poor people" intentionally overpaying! Because they could!!
they have driven prices up, overpaying for many items, especially for real estate.
they constantly compare prices to where they came from without regard to local economy.
they steal businesses from the locals,
they are willing to come here and exploit the system meant for Ecuadorians
they are benefiting from cost savings and that is not fair to the citizens of chosen destination.
they are overwhelming medical facilities and take advantage of the socialized medical system.
they line up at SRI (the tax office) to get their I.V.A. (12% national Value Added Tax) refunded and they do not deserve it.
they are "heartless gringos"
they have a ...llion times more than the locals will ever have when it comes to money
and so on.

What poor "ugly gringos" to do when they don't feel at home or cannot afford to live in their home countries where millions of legal and illegal immigrants use the system in a way gringos can't even dream of in Ecuador?  Where to go and how to behave? How to determine what is "Good" or "Bad" in modern world? Just few hundreds years ago they would conquer and slaughter, now they are legally immigrating and the world are shrinking for "gringos".

At least "ugly gringos" in Ecuador not saying that "it is our country, not theirs And We Are Not Going to Leave" like Univision senior anchor J R declared.
source: http://www.eutimes.net/2017/02/univisions-jorge-ramos-tells-latinos-america-is-our-country-not-theirs/
"Ugly gringos" don't behead people and don't even threat to behead, not even their Spanish language teachers, imagine that!
http://www.wnd.com/2017/03/muslim-students-threaten-to-behead-teachers/

"Ugly gringos" don't plow trucks into crowd
http://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/truck-plows-into-crowd-in-nice-france/
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-germany-truck-idUSKBN148287
so far there are no reports about Ecuadorian women being raped by "ugly gringos" sex mobs, more likely that the single "ugly gringo" would get married and support Ec woman and her family.
They (shamed "ugly gringos") don't attack malls, airports, trains and other public transportation hubs in Ecuador.
http://edition.cnn.com/2016/09/19/us/new-york-explosion-investigation/
http://edition.cnn.com/2016/09/18/us/minnesota-mall-stabbing/
"Ugly gringos" in Ecuador don't demand havens for their illegal activities, because 99.99% of them have legal status and are law abiding citizens, even 99.99% of their so called "sins" are legal from law's point of view. Compare to this.
http://cis.org/Sanctuary-Cities-Map_USA
They don't slaughter anymore
Conquistadors-slaughtered-South-Americas-men-took-women-DNA-study-shows

Give an "ugly gringo" a break. They are not so bad after all: no beheading, no raping, no terror attacks in their host country - they are almost an angels! As one "ugly gringo" said: "Everything is in perspective".

Tensions rise over election results in province Manabi, Ecuador. February 2017.

In previous post I wrote about movement in Ecuador, online, mostly Facebook and Twitter, with slogan "Nunca más pisen Manabí!"/"We'll never set foot in Manabi"
http://dayinquito.blogspot.com/2017/02/interesting-fact-about-election-results.html
eldiario.ec/noticias-manabi-ecuador/polemica-por-insultos-dirigidos-a-manabitas-a-traves-de-redes-sociales/
Lately, officials and media got involved, defending people of Manabi.

To help people of Manabi to recuperate after earthquake, Quitenos donated food(including lots of cans of tuna) and necessities, caravan of cars and trucks were organized by entities and people of Quito to deliver help to Manabi. As they say: "No good deed goes unpunished".
On February 24th group of people, claiming to be from Manabi congregated in front of headquarters of Movimiento Creo which has Lasso as a presidential candidate. They threw cans of tuna in front of the building in protest. "No se puede insultar a los ciudadanos manabitas" they said. In English "Can't insult people of Manabi"
Apparently they didn't need help after all, returning cans of tuna to Quitenos.
El Comercio: Un grupo de personas arrojaron latas de atún fuera de un edificio en Quito. A group of people threw cans of tuna outside of buiding in Quito.  Foto: API
They were prepared, equipped with well made flags, it looks like they have resources to travel to Quito, to prepare their propaganda materials, etc.
On a flag there is a message: "Respect Manabi F-k  / Lenin President"

Update: Some people on these photos were identified as affiliated with current regime. On Facebook I found at least two identities of protesters posted.  In this case it's not a protest, it's a provocation and dirty politics.

Interesting fact about election results in province Manabi, Ecuador. February 2017.

As you probably know, an earthquake occurred in Ecuador on April 16, 2016 with a moment magnitude of 7.8. Widespread damage was caused across Manabi province, with structures collapsing. Why these structures collapsed? Buildings (including hotels and hostals) had collapsed because of poor construction. First, concrete cement was mixed with sea (beach) sand, that sand is too salty and affected the concrete strength. Second, buildings simply fell over themselves or violently inclined because the foundation could not bear to the upper floors.

and Manabi is one of Ecuador’s main tourist destinations!

The whole world donated money to Ecuador to help people of Manabi who lost their houses and business (constructed with salty sea sand), to survive and rebuild. However majority of these who lost their houses, business, still live in now rotten tents. Where is the money?
Taxes were raised in Ecuador, IVA was 12%, now 14% to fund earthquake recovery.  IVA translates in English as value added tax (VAT). However majority of these who lost their houses, business,  still live in now rotten tents. Where is recovery?

Nevertheless 53,89% of people of Manabi voted for the current regime.

There is movement in Ecuador now, online, mostly Facebook and Twitter, slogan "Nunca más pisen Manabí!"  I let you do your own translation for this.

Election drama continues..

Voting in Ecuador. February 2017.

In 2013 and 2014 I could see my polling place (in Centro Historico) from far away on election day: lots of police and soldiers. There were soldiers with serious weapons in front of every voting room(junta). In 2017 my impression was that we had less of military presence at the polling place where I voted.
Election process was very well organized on February 19, 2017 - I was directed to a room #X. In the room they had two tables with election workers, one table had women workers only and another - men only. In front of the room there were two lines of people who came to vote, men in one line and mujeres in the other. Men would go to the "men" table and, accordingly, women to the "women" table.
I received five ballots papers and I have to say it wasn't easy to vote.

The question in "consulta popular" about tax heavens and politicians was constructed in a way it was almost impossible to understand it: double, triple negative in a single grammatical construction.
On a ballots voters supposed to follow rules that weren't easy to find, nevertheless if you don't follow them you vote is not counted.

For example if you cross the box on a ballot - your vote is not valid, if you put any character except one that legally valid - your vote is null. To find out how to vote correctly I had to watch a few videos I found at El Comercio site and on a Facebook.

Voting is obligatory for Ecuadorian citizens and optional for residents. Ecuadorians must present recent Certificado de Votacion when dealing with bureaucracy and banking system, without Certificado de Votacion they won't be served. If they missed voting they have to go to CNE(Consejo Nacional Electoral) and pay fine to receive Certificado de Votacion.

click here to sign petition  change.org-petition
The text of the petition in English: The Shuar community of Nankints in Ecuador was evicted in August 2016 to make way for the construction of a mining camp, La Esperanza, belonging to a Chinese company, Explorcobres SA. The mining company, through a court order, has claimed these indigenous territories as its own. The mega-mining project has been given the go-ahead without prior consultation or consent from the affected communities. The project is strategic as it is considered the second largest copper mine in the world.
The concessions allocated to the Chinese company surpass 41,000 hectares, located in the San Juan Bosco county in the province of Morona Santiago in Ecuador’s southern Amazon region. The project is still in the advanced exploratory phase and the eviction of other Shuar communities is feared. Since the August eviction, the county has been militarized. According to indigenous organizations, police have been undertaking constant searches, raids and controls of indigenous groups, creating harassment and fear in the county’s inhabitants.
Last November, several Shuar people attempted to reclaim the indigenous territory of Nankints. Clashes broke out with police and military personnel guarding the mining camp, leaving several people injured. The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), and the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of the Ecuadorian Amazon (CONFENIAE), called for dialogue with the Government to avoid further confrontations but no resolution was reached.
On Wednesday, December 14, a new confrontation took place in the mining camp, leaving one police officer dead. Seven police officers and soldiers were wounded. After these events, the Ecuadorian Government decreed a state of emergency in the province of Morona Santiago, which prohibits the right to association; overrides the right to inviolability of the home; permits the censorship of information; and allows the deployment of armed forces. Currently, more than 700 elite soldiers and policemen have been deployed from Quito and Guayaquil to the join the existing military presence in San Juan Bosco. Large numbers of military trucks and tanks have also been mobilized. The military intervention began at dawn on Saturday December 17 with an invasion by land and air. According to witness testimony, the women and children of the San Carlos Limón and Panantza parishes have taken refuge in the mountains.
Human rights lawyers report that 4 people have been arrested and that the community is frightened by the military presence. Human rights and indigenous organizations fear a strong repression of the indigenous Shuar people and more confrontations to come.
From CONAIE and CONFENIAE, we demand that the authority demilitarize the territory to avoid further confrontations and acts of violence. We call on the Ministry of the Interior, The Ministry of Defense and the Joint Command of the Armed Forces to act according to the Ecuadorian Constitution and respect the life of the Shuar People.

We call for dialogue and respect for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Ecuadorian Constitution, both of which forbid the presence of military personnel in indigenous territories and require prior, informed and free consultations before the implementation of mining or oil projects.

Hanzo with its gorgeous view of the city offers a wonderful selection of Peruvian Japanese Cuisine and for all our InterNations members they have something special prepared:
- A welcome drink
- Delicious appetizers
- Exclusive InterNations area
- Free Valet parking or free garage.
As usual, all newcomers to InterNations and our Quito community are more than welcome to join! We are a very friendly bunch and love meeting new people. Even when we are standing in a group carrying on a conversation we will always welcome a new face and old ones too to join in. We look forward to seeing you there!
