Three things I wish someone had told me before coming to Ecuador.

From Cotacachi expats facebook page
Quote
3 Things I wish someone had told me before coming to Ecuador.
The first is about money. Don't bring anything larger than a $20. You will have a very hard time breaking anything larger. Even the banks will not work with you unless you are a customer. The good news is that the ATM's will accept your card. Chips are taking over so it is easier if your card has a chip. Banco Pinchinca allows the highest withdrawal I have found. Up to $600 a day. Of course your bank at home may have a lower limit. Take singles to the mercado.
The second thing is about hot water. Turn the hot water faucet all the way on and leave it there. Cool it down by adding cold water not turning the hot water down. It took me a year to discover that little hint. It does not work like it does at home. Trust me. I thought we had lousy hot water, turns out it is great!
And the third. Watch your feet while walking, always. If you want to see something, stop and then look up. The sidewalks and streets are littered with dangers. Never mind the dog poop. All these little metal things that stick up, broken sidewalks or tiles. Slants in the sidewalk for drive ways that match the pretty tile-work. Post, rocks, unevenness, I mean it goes on and on. I guarantee, if you are not always looking at your feet, you will be on the ground.
Hope these tips help, enjoy your stay in this beautiful, friendly country.
Oh, and one more thing. Ecuadorian time is always late. Get used to it and enjoy living in the moment and the tranquility like they do.
End of quote

Is it safe to live in Ecuador? It depends what you compare it with. September 2016.

Often, people from US ask forums of expats if it's safe to live in Ecuador.
Not really; considering that Ecuador moving toward socialism, there is danger of becoming Venezuela.  Earthquakes in Ecuador range from destructive to scary and annoying. Crime is a severe problem in Ecuador, you have to be extra careful with your possessions, the thieves are always watching you, looking for opportunity to steal.

So, it's not really safe to live in Ecuador, but it depends what you compare it with.
At least here we don't have trucks plowing through crowd, MASS public shootings, bombing and stabbings and very unlikely for that to happen: first, because there are no free handouts here, second, lack of oxygen in the Andes and abundance of sun changing people behavior.
As for now, I would rather be in Ecuador than in USA  or Europe.

Timeline of the attacks in US: New York, New Jersey and Minnesota.
Saturday, September 17, 2016.
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2016/09/19/timeline-new-york-new-jersey-bombings/90685308/

Saturday 9:35am ET. - New Jersey
Pipe bomb explodes near a charity race at  Seaside Park, New Jersey, organized by the US Marines.

Saturday 8:30pm ET - New York
A loud explosion is heard in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, New York. At least 29 people injured in New York's popular Chelsea neighborhood on Saturday. On Monday, NYPD confirm that suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, a naturalized US citizen born in Afghanistan, has been taken into custody following a shoot-out with police

Saturday 8:15pm CT -  Minnesota
Knife-wielding assailant dressed in security guard uniform stabs 8 people in a Minnesota shopping centre, a bloody rampage during which he reportedly asked at least one victim whether they were Muslim and referenced Allah.
Authorities didn't identify the attacker, but the Star Tribune of Minneapolis said the man's father identified him as Dahir A. Adan, 22. Speaking to the newspaper through an interpreter, Ahmed Adan, whose family is Somali, said his son was born in Africa and had lived in the U.S. for 15 years.

If you are not safe in Minnesota mall, at New Jersey event and in Manhattan's restaurant , you are not safe anywhere. Myth of safety is long gone!

Crime in Ecuador. Quito, August 2015.

As you can see from testimonials below, in Ecuador, the victims of robbery don't have rights, however, the thieves are protected.
Testimonial: Peter P. from France source "El Comercio", June 15, 2015.
Peter P and his spouse were traveling in Argentina, Bolivia and Perú before arriving to Ecuador, where they were robbed on a bus Quito-Tulcan.
When they realized that they were robbed, Peter immediately informed the bus driver and bus stopped at a gas station. Peter asked bus driver to see the recording of the bus camera, to try to determine who was the person who slashed the backpack, but the bus driver said that they could not.
Peter and his spouse decided to return to Quito and denounced the theft in the police and Prosecutor's Office. In these places they were told that to check the recordings had to wait three days.

Testimonial: Karolina L. from Quito, posted on Facebook
translation is below the text in Spanish.
Decidimos no hacer nada.

Today, Thursday, August 8 at 12:30 pm in the Av. Portugal y Av. 6 de Diciembre, my mother was assaulted by two cowards, they were trying to still cellular, my mother put resistance, they struck her, knocking her to the ground.
We call the police, they arrived after a few minutes, while the crowd wanted to do justice by own account.
We decided to go to file the complaint, we went with fear but with the desire to fulfill our civic responsibility.
We find ourselves with an outdated and slow bureaucrat system where we were forced to stay in cameras, to wait for medical examinations of the assailants for having being struck, declarations approximately 9 hours.
To all this we had 10 people (relatives of thieves) waiting for us outside, who knows what for.
We decide not to do anything. Incredibly we had to lose because in addition not promised that these crooks will be in prison.
We had to leave with police! Us! The victims. And let things go unpunished. Only when it happens to you, you understand. IMPUNITY, INJUSTICE, INDIGNATION, OUTRAGE... .. FRUSTRATION
Citizens are nothing against these people (robbers) who ironically are protected by the law.
This is a public complaint but mostly is a thank you to all the citizens who were outraged during arrest of  this scourge.
These citizens are those who are tired of living at the mercy of a few scoundrels. What a disappointment.
We are still in the hands of people who don't care about well-being of the citizens.
I wish the President and the Assembly members will walk down these streets without so much police escorting them so that they feel the insecurity that we feel every day.

Life in Quito. Anecdotes. Ecuador. August 2015.

For many years, every Sunday morning, we have Sunday edition of "El Comercio" delivered to our apartment building, whoever want to buy it goes downstairs and for one dollar it's yours.
The seller, woman who appears to be physical and mental handicap, has a paper route spanning few blocks and many apartment buildings. Her "modus operandi" - she usually sits on a sidewalk in front of one of the conjuntos (apartment building) and hollers "El Comercio", eventually, people living there come out and buy papers from her, sometimes people don't want to walk and they shout so she would deliver paper to their footsteps. Then she moves on to another conjunto and so on.
One Sunday she seemed to be upset, I asked her what's the matter and it turned out that she left her "base" with rest of the papers and walked short distance to closest apartment building to sell one "El Comercio", she moves very slow due to her disability. Someone stole her papers while she was gone!!! 20 of them, along with the bag. At our peaceful and empty, on Sunday morning, street!
As you can see, thieves in Quito are equal opportunity and if they steal from this kind of person, they will definitely steal from you - if you let them.

Life in Quito. Anecdotes. Ecuador. July 2015.

One Saturday morning my downstairs neighbor found herself locked out of her car and her apartment. What would you do in this situation? Well, she called 911 and asked for a firefighters to come over and get her purse from a locked apartment.
They came upon request, without sirens and other rocket: no police, no ambulance. Group of firefighters marched to our terrace and with the thick black rope one of them descended to her bedroom window, slid the window, got inside, picked up her purse with the keys and delivered it to her on a terrace! Unbelievable! Somehow I don't see firefighters from US (or Russia) doing this.

I talked to them afterwards, they didn't charge her, didn't reprimand her, their visit was free, calm and friendly.

High expectations and life in Ecuador. Quito Ecuador. June 2015.

High expectations and life in Ecuador don't mix. If you have high expectation for anything in Ecuador (weather, low prices, Ecuadorians speaking English, etc) you simply won't survive here.
Let's look at June and July 2015 events.
There are protests on a streets of Ecuadorian cities and pueblos since beginning of June.
Galapagos were closed for a while because of protests.
Pope Francis coming to Ecuador - Quito airport and some Quito's neighborhoods will be closed for vehicular traffic in the first week of July.
There was such strong wind in June, in Quito, for a few weeks, that some properties, trees and cars were damaged by it.
The road from Quito to Tena was damaged by mudslides in the end of June, so if you have Hotel Spa Termas de Papallacta(which is accessible only through this road), reserved - good luck getting there.

That's what make life in Ecuador chaotic, exciting and impossible for perfectionists.

Tranquil and safe areas in Ecuador. June 2015.

Areas in Ecuador which are tranquil and safe don't exist for gringos and upper/middle class Ecuadorians. Ecuador is not a secure place to live if you don't have a tall fence or wall around your property with electric fence or broken glass or metal spikes and other serious anti-climb measures on top. Private security in a middle class and up neighborhoods is a must - in addition to the fence described above. Inside of these walls are lovely courtyards, Ecuadorians love the courtyard and they hide their wealth inside of their compounds.
It's all about your precautions and luck. However, Ecuador is much safer than some crime ridden neighborhoods of USA cities and, definitely, much safer than Baltimore and Ferguson. Looting and arson is practically impossible in Quito, because wealth of Ecuadorians is not so easy accessible - try to break window or door with metal bars or set up building made of concrete on fire.

I see rise of the crime in the future and the reasons are, on my opinion:
Since current ruler took leadership in 2007,  Ecuador has very strict gun laws. Citizens of Ecuador practically (theoretically, yes, but try to ...)  don't have rights to own guns, only military, police, private guards do have these rights and, of course, criminals possess guns because they don't care about the law.
You cannot bring your guns from US to Ecuador. No chance to defend yourself against criminals and you can't rely on police for protection, the police (in Ecuador) more likely to protect the criminal than law abiding citizen. You can read about it here
Youngsters up to 18 years old considered "children" in Ecuador and absolutely prohibited to work by the current administration. It is very noble intention - not to use child labor, however consequences are not so good.
Children of the middle and upper class go to college after high school. After finishing public school, 18 years old from poorer family rarely make it to college. Growing up without being apprentice or trainee on the job with family members like it was for many generations, before current leadership decided to change it, most of the time, he/she doesn't want to work, doesn't have work ethic, no skills, no desire to acquire skills.
Robbing people is more lucrative business for idle young people than to go to work every day, if they are lucky to get a job somewhere somehow.

New labor laws, minimal wage requirements, new tax imposed on imported goods - again enforced since 2007. It is humane and charitable (for someone else expense, not government's ) intention as well, only it's eliminating jobs, not creating them, or helping people to survive.
At least Ecuador is still cheaper in some areas of living expenses: cost of food, for example, if you buy it at farmers markets, 25 cents city bus ride, $20-$40 doctor's appointment and so on. The weather in Quito is MUCH better than in Minnesota, Florida and in between. Ecuadorians, as a crowd, are not as aggressive, as in Russia, or as in USA urban ghettos.
To be tranquil and safe in Ecuador, not easy but possible - takes effort, street smart and money.

Foreigners and Quito. Ecuador. May 2015.

In this post, when I say "foreigners" or "they", I mean English or Russian speaking people, who arrive in Quito as a tourists, volunteers, with academic interest, to work, to became expats or to live in Quito for a while.
Observing this kind of people from 2006, since my first visit to Ecuador, I conclude that not "they" are the ones to pick and choose Quito, it's Quito who accepting or rejecting foreigners.
For some newcomers , Quito shower them with chances:
They are getting all assistance they required,
They discover love, friendship, social life, companionship,
They obtain work, volunteer or business opportunities,
Their health condition improving or disappearing
They acquire real estate in good areas for satisfactory prices
if they wish to rent instead of buy, they find decent place for reasonable cost.
even when they are robbed they are stoic about it and they have lots of help from different sources to cover their losses.

Other might not be so lucky and seems to be rejected
They have altitude sickness or their health conditions worsening
Their credit cards are compromised one way or another and there are no way to withdraw money
They got robbed and it is fatal for them
They cannot find food and items, they accustomed to, in stores and/or markets
They invest in a rotten deals.
They try to buy real estate, but the deals not going thru by a myriad of different reasons.
Quito is too noisy and not friendly to them in one way or another.

No amount of research tell whether or not you will thrive in Quito, in particular, or Ecuador in general. You have to come over and experience the country and the city.

The Pros and Cons of living in Ecuador. The Property - part two. May 2015.

Buying and selling property - something like this could happen:
from ExpatExchange Ecuador forum
quote
Hi everyone: I came to Ecuador several years ago and purchased a beautiful house in Manta. I enjoyed the area and the people and decided to buy a parcel of land (3 hectares ) I went through an attorney and real estate company and had a survey done. I have paid my taxes on time and never had a question from the county.
Now I have decided to sell the lot and for several months the county has refused to give title. They requested another survey by their person and I did that and actually came up with a larger space. They still will not give title.
What can I do now?
I did receive the escritura (title - LB) when I bought it. It is from the Provincina and now they say it is being disputed. This is an individual plot of land that was surveyed and they accepted.
I did have an attorney as well as the real estate company.

Inflation and furnishing apartment or house in Quito, Ecuador. May 2015.

As I already wrote on February 9, 2015, in my blog, that appliances, furnishing, bedding, household items are more expensive in Ecuador than in US. To fully equip two bedroom apartment would cost at least five thousands or more.

Well, few months later, this number is outdated. Since new tariffs were announced in March 2015, everything went up, not just imported goods. Five thousands is barely enough now only for basic appliances.
On top of this it's very confusing for the homeowner what to buy: induction stove and calefon (even subsided - substantial electric bill) or gas stove and calefon (prices doubled on Jan 1st 2015 because of the government's penalty and its becoming difficult to buy gas stove, calefon and replace gas tank).

In 2007 I spent less than $800 for brand new, all together:  four burner gas stove, NOT flat screen TV set and smallish refrigerator.
In 2008 it took less than $500 to buy calefon (water heater) and smallish washing machine.
In 2010, price of brand new appliances: refrigerator, washing machine and six burners stove - $1550. The calefon, brand new Bosh - $350.
Right now, to buy brand new appliances: refrigerator, washing machine, calefon, stove, induction or gas, - you have to pay around $1000 each or more.

Price of 100% cotton bedding in Quito, basic 200 or 300 thread count, three times more what you would pay in US stores like Target or on Amazon.

Again, for these of you who want decent but cheap ($300 - $500) furnished short term accommodations in Quito - dream on.
For $200 - $300 it is not so easy to get long term unfurnished apartment in Quito as of 2015, and then you have to pay utilities and association fee on top of the rent, and for this price, most likely, it will be in less desirable location.

For $500 you might get small place for a year or more rental, with old uncomfortable furniture and appliances, neither good location, no hot water - electric shower, no internet at all or not satisfactory internet, no washing machine, etc...

Quito is not cheap anymore but still cheaper than living in big USA cities.

The Pros and Cons of living in Ecuador. The Food. April 2015.

Food in Ecuador (Pros):
If you shop at the farmer markets and little vendors, your grocery bill will be times less than shopping in supermarkets. Most of the food grown/made locally.
A variety of temperature and rainfall patterns resulted in a diversity of tropical and temperate crops. Moderate or cool temperatures in highland areas allowed the cultivation of products usually associated with more northern latitudes. In the Costa, a warm climate, fertile soils, and proximity to ports led to large-scale production of such export crops as coffee, bananas, sugar, cacao, palm oil, and rice. Smaller plots in the Sierra produced potatoes, corn, beans, wheat, barley, and tea. Larger farms practiced dairy farming as well as increasing production of nontraditional crops such as cut flowers, asparagus, and snow peas.
I shop at the farmer market within walking distance from my house.
The whole fish, including bones, head and all this - is $2 -$4 per pound. Fish file is $5-$7 per pound. Shrimp, depend in size - $3.50 - $5 per pound.
Chicken:
Split breast $1.75 - $2 per pound
Drumstick-thigh combination $1.30 - $1.40 per pound
Pork
I usually buy pork belly cuts for $2.50
Free-range eggs 25 cents for one egg
Fresh farmer cheese one pound from $2 - $2.50
Potatoes 25 - 40 cents per pound
Fruits and vegetable bought at farmer market are really cheap
You can buy bunch of onions OR carrot or tomatoes or red peppers or pea for 50 cents
fruits or berries for $1 - $2

Food in Ecuador (Cons):
Many imported consumer and food items are scarce, expensive, or not available at all.

The Pros and Cons of living in Ecuador. The Transportation. April 2015.

Transportation in Ecuador(Pros):
There are plenty of  buses, trolley, taxis in Quito. City buses and trolley cost 25 cents and they ride from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. with the small intervals. The most you would wait for the bus -  20 or 30 minutes. Waiting time for trolley is five minutes.
Taxis are about $12 per hour.

Transportation in Ecuador (Cons):
Taking a taxi in Quito, Guayaquil and Manta can be dangerous (express kidnapping, robberies). In Guayaquil it happens more often than in Quito.
And be careful walking… sidewalks are full of obstacles.

The Pros and Cons of living in Ecuador. The Property. April 2015.

Property in Ecuador (pros):
Property taxes are much, much cheaper (than in USA). Association fees cheaper as well. In most apartment buildings you can have pets. You don't need heating or air conditioning (in Quito) - less bills to pay.
My North Quito apartment's YEARLY property tax is about $45 and association fee is $50 monthly
My Centro Historico Quito apartment's YEARLY property tax is about $20 and association fee is $15 monthly
Looting and arson is practically impossible in Quito. Apartment buildings, churches, houses, office buildings, etc, built with concrete (concrete will not burn) and are almost all fenced/walled. Sometimes there are electric fences, broken glass, metal spikes and other serious anti-climb measures on top of the fences and walls. Private armed security are everywhere: in the stores, apartment buildings, offices. Small businesses have metal gates or shutters over the doors and windows.

Property management companies in US exist to prohibit pretty much every activity regarding pets and kids, and they charge arm and leg for this oppression.

Here in Quito, when I go out during the day, I usually give our concierge my North Quito
(where I live) apartment's keys and she let out Sashka, my dog, to the roof terrace. I pay her $1 - $2 and everyone was happy.
The concierge of Centro Historico conjunto has my apartment keys on permanent basis. He does some maintenance in the apartment as needed.

Property in Ecuador (cons):
Cost of furnishing (electronics, furniture, appliances, bedding) is outrageous.
Home robberies are on the rise, although I believe that in a city like Quito less probability that your apartment will be robbed.
There is no illusion here in Ecuador that the police will protect private property. Everyone is responsible for their own safety.

Car alarms and barking dogs under your bedroom window...

The Pros and Cons of living in Ecuador. The Government. April 2015.

The Government in Ecuador (Pros):
Police force in Ecuador is not for reinforcing economical measures as it used in US. They are more like friendly presence unless there are protests. Police in Ecuador can be brutal dealing with protesters.
If police drive by and see food stand on street they might stop to eat there, not to ask about license to operate.

Ecuador has different criminal justice system than US. The United States system of case law and statutes based on English Common Law. Latin American(Ecuador included) system of law enforcement based on Napoleonic System. The difference: In Ecuador - no undercover operations, no asset seizures without charges against a person, the very act of committing a crime is the basic requirement for the initiation of prosecutorial action.

The Government in Ecuador (Cons):
Bureaucracy in Ecuador exploded after 2007, for example, Registro Civil used to have just a few customer service windows, now it has 63.
The law is dissimilar in Ecuador (see above) and legal matters you take for granted in USA don't exist, or played differently, or hard to comprehend, or not easy to get here.
The police force won't protect you and your private property in Ecuador: reporting petty crime to the police is useless.
