All of the profiles on RentAFriend.com are public except for the friend's contract information. Anyone can view the friend's photos, details, and read their profiles, but in order to contact the friend you must become a member. Membership fees are $24.95 per month or $69.95 for an entire year. The friends charge between $10-$50 per hour, and almost all of them are willing to negotiate or even waive their fee depending on the activity that the member wants to do.

Saturday night earthquake. "Conspiracy theories". Quito Ecuador. April 2016.

Japan was struck by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake on April 15, 2016. One day later, on April 16, Ecuador was struck by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake.
The earthquakes in Japan and Ecuador this weekend occurred along the Ring of Fire, a long chain of volcanoes and other tectonically active structures surrounding the Pacific. Image via U.S. Geological Survey.

Are the two somehow related?
nytimes journalists said no, it is not related.
quote
No. The two quakes occurred about 9,000 miles apart. That’s far too distant for there to be any connection between them.

However, there are others with opposing opinions.
Powerful Earthquakes Occurring Every Day Reflect A Planet In Deep Transition.

from the article above:
quote
There have been 16 major earthquakes measuring 6.0 or higher in April alone and nine in the last seven days. source http://earthquaketrack.com/recent?mag_filter=6

according to this article
... deep drilling actually causing earthquakes
... There is mounting evidence that electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapons developed over the last quarter century can heat up known fault lines over targeted areas to cause tectonic plate shifts. The Fukushima disaster, the Chile, and the Haiti earthquakes in recent years are suspected to be EMP induced.

More earthquakes coming?
or is that another "conspiracy theory" and we should believe nytimes?

Your blog info makes the whole of Ecuador and Quito in particular very undesirable. January 2016.

In December 2015, I received email from Brian Y.
Quote
Hello, I was considering visiting Ecuador and making Quito one of my stops. Your blog info makes the whole of Ecuador and Quito in particular  very undesirable. I'm wondering if you
even realize that your apartment remains vacant because of your negative blogging. Good luck with that.
End of quote

According to his approach, the whole world is undesirable right now, including European countries, US and Canada - damn these "negative" news and blogs!
Read this "negative" article (link below) and no Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Italy, India, Nicaragua, Singapore, Britain, Dubai and China for your neither?

At least sun still shines every morning (well, almost every..) in Quito and view is magnificent from my La Ronda condo's balcony and terrace.
Happy New Year Quito, I love you!!! I wish you to be as affordable and free spirited as in the past!!!

P.S. My La Ronda condo is still affordable, especially in comparison with New York, Miami, Moscow, London, Paris, and even Minneapolis rentals!

To ship or not to ship personal belonging from USA to Ecuador? September 2015

Expats opinions from ExpatExchange Ecuador forum and InterNations Quito forum. To ship or not to ship?

Opinion #1
Pack it up and bring it with you on the plane.
You also have a period of time from when you enter the country and receive your visa to receive a shipment via cargo -- this is a rather involved process and requires professional assistance. As for delivery via say UPS -- the cost is astronomical.

Opinion #2
It just isn't worth it. With the money you save, you can do a billion runs to and from Miami to purchase all those items you really feel you need AFTER you move here. Your perspective may change once you set up house.
Just a couple of weeks ago, they had a special on LAN Airlines for GYE-MIA first class, all in at 750 or something like that. That's three bags of 70 lbs each for each person. That's a lot of pans, plates, sheets, towels, mattress toppers, tools, and appliances for two people flying.
Plus, you can have new beautiful furniture made by local artisans for less than it would cost to haul that old sofa and kitchen table down here.
Almost everything can be had in Ecuador and the price difference for buying new items in Ecuador (those that won't fit in your bags like a TV, Washer/dryer...whatever..).will still be cheaper than paying a huge sum of money to haul your older stuff down.

Opinion #3
We just arrived 2 weeks ago. I agree to not ship any furniture or large appliances...get them here. We are only shipping personal items...lots of books, clothing and other personal items for a total of 3 palettes(1 pallet=48"x48"x80"). We opted to use a shipping company, International Van Lines. We thought about using the extra suitcase routine but we have lots of books and that weight adds up fast. Considering the traveling we did immediately after arriving it would have be a real pain in the behind. It was a pain with the 4 suitcases and 2 backpacks we had You can always get an estimate and go that way if you choose to. We packed some basic get started stuff for the kitchen, a set of sheets and towels. The rest of the linens were used as packing supplies. So explore your options based on what you are bringing.

Opinion #4
If it is fragile -- breakable and irreplaceable -- give it to someone you love -- don't ship it here.
If it is a fridge, stove, washer dryer or BBQ...leave it in the States -- because you won't be able to get service for it here --parts are different and service is different.
If it is furniture -- you can buy it here...sell it give it away
Pretty much if it something you would have your kids or family inherit when you die -- give it to them now.
Okay -- what does that leave?
Woodworking tools, craft equipment, cutlery -- clothes (especially large size shoes and large size clothes.
Religious articles -- although if you are Catholic you have hit the jackpot -- if you are Jewish -- bring a mezuzah but Chabad will be happy to come and bring you a few for a nice donation, and bring your menorah, candle sticks, oh heck you know the drill. if you are Protestant of whatever denomination... uh... bring your favorite bible.. if you Muslim, your Qu'uran and your mat and yes there are Mosques ... your best contacts are in Quito and find your local Shwarma stand :)
Basically what I am saying is -- you want to bring that makes your house a home -- but this is a fresh start -- not a place to cloister yourself with everything you had back where you came from. Things do not travel well and they do get lost in the move. Give stuff away to those who need it -- down size -- and lighten the load -- Life is easier that way.

Opinion #5
Please think twice about shipping anything to Ecuador! Our members (South American Explorer Quito Clubhouse) have had terrible experiences with the Ecuadorian Customs system. Import papers must be redone several times, depending on the particular clerk. Additional duties on both new and used items are imposed at the last minute. Things are stolen out of the shipping boxes after each box has been opened and rifled. It took V.., moving from the US, over three months to finally get her stuff released for customs. AND any small package over 4 kilos is charged $40 or more for importation. AND there are no import contractors that will make a difference. V.. used one out of Miami, Florida and it made no difference. Here is my suggestion. Bring everything with you as excess baggage. I know it sounds crazy, but that is cheaper and faster than actually trying to ship you stuff. The boxes will glide through airport customs unless they are in a "just purchased" large box.

High expectations and life in Ecuador. Quito Ecuador. June 2015.

High expectations and life in Ecuador don't mix. If you have high expectation for anything in Ecuador (weather, low prices, Ecuadorians speaking English, etc) you simply won't survive here.
Let's look at June and July 2015 events.
There are protests on a streets of Ecuadorian cities and pueblos since beginning of June.
Galapagos were closed for a while because of protests.
Pope Francis coming to Ecuador - Quito airport and some Quito's neighborhoods will be closed for vehicular traffic in the first week of July.
There was such strong wind in June, in Quito, for a few weeks, that some properties, trees and cars were damaged by it.
The road from Quito to Tena was damaged by mudslides in the end of June, so if you have Hotel Spa Termas de Papallacta(which is accessible only through this road), reserved - good luck getting there.

That's what make life in Ecuador chaotic, exciting and impossible for perfectionists.

Foreigners and Quito. Ecuador. May 2015.

In this post, when I say "foreigners" or "they", I mean English or Russian speaking people, who arrive in Quito as a tourists, volunteers, with academic interest, to work, to became expats or to live in Quito for a while.
Observing this kind of people from 2006, since my first visit to Ecuador, I conclude that not "they" are the ones to pick and choose Quito, it's Quito who accepting or rejecting foreigners.
For some newcomers , Quito shower them with chances:
They are getting all assistance they required,
They discover love, friendship, social life, companionship,
They obtain work, volunteer or business opportunities,
Their health condition improving or disappearing
They acquire real estate in good areas for satisfactory prices
if they wish to rent instead of buy, they find decent place for reasonable cost.
even when they are robbed they are stoic about it and they have lots of help from different sources to cover their losses.

Other might not be so lucky and seems to be rejected
They have altitude sickness or their health conditions worsening
Their credit cards are compromised one way or another and there are no way to withdraw money
They got robbed and it is fatal for them
They cannot find food and items, they accustomed to, in stores and/or markets
They invest in a rotten deals.
They try to buy real estate, but the deals not going thru by a myriad of different reasons.
Quito is too noisy and not friendly to them in one way or another.

No amount of research tell whether or not you will thrive in Quito, in particular, or Ecuador in general. You have to come over and experience the country and the city.

The Pros and Cons of living in Ecuador. The Property - part two. May 2015.

Buying and selling property - something like this could happen:
from ExpatExchange Ecuador forum
quote
Hi everyone: I came to Ecuador several years ago and purchased a beautiful house in Manta. I enjoyed the area and the people and decided to buy a parcel of land (3 hectares ) I went through an attorney and real estate company and had a survey done. I have paid my taxes on time and never had a question from the county.
Now I have decided to sell the lot and for several months the county has refused to give title. They requested another survey by their person and I did that and actually came up with a larger space. They still will not give title.
What can I do now?
I did receive the escritura (title - LB) when I bought it. It is from the Provincina and now they say it is being disputed. This is an individual plot of land that was surveyed and they accepted.
I did have an attorney as well as the real estate company.

The Pros and Cons of living in Ecuador. The Food. April 2015.

Food in Ecuador (Pros):
If you shop at the farmer markets and little vendors, your grocery bill will be times less than shopping in supermarkets. Most of the food grown/made locally.
A variety of temperature and rainfall patterns resulted in a diversity of tropical and temperate crops. Moderate or cool temperatures in highland areas allowed the cultivation of products usually associated with more northern latitudes. In the Costa, a warm climate, fertile soils, and proximity to ports led to large-scale production of such export crops as coffee, bananas, sugar, cacao, palm oil, and rice. Smaller plots in the Sierra produced potatoes, corn, beans, wheat, barley, and tea. Larger farms practiced dairy farming as well as increasing production of nontraditional crops such as cut flowers, asparagus, and snow peas.
I shop at the farmer market within walking distance from my house.
The whole fish, including bones, head and all this - is $2 -$4 per pound. Fish file is $5-$7 per pound. Shrimp, depend in size - $3.50 - $5 per pound.
Chicken:
Split breast $1.75 - $2 per pound
Drumstick-thigh combination $1.30 - $1.40 per pound
Pork
I usually buy pork belly cuts for $2.50
Free-range eggs 25 cents for one egg
Fresh farmer cheese one pound from $2 - $2.50
Potatoes 25 - 40 cents per pound
Fruits and vegetable bought at farmer market are really cheap
You can buy bunch of onions OR carrot or tomatoes or red peppers or pea for 50 cents
fruits or berries for $1 - $2

Food in Ecuador (Cons):
Many imported consumer and food items are scarce, expensive, or not available at all.

The Pros and Cons of living in Ecuador. The Transportation. April 2015.

Transportation in Ecuador(Pros):
There are plenty of  buses, trolley, taxis in Quito. City buses and trolley cost 25 cents and they ride from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. with the small intervals. The most you would wait for the bus -  20 or 30 minutes. Waiting time for trolley is five minutes.
Taxis are about $12 per hour.

Transportation in Ecuador (Cons):
Taking a taxi in Quito, Guayaquil and Manta can be dangerous (express kidnapping, robberies). In Guayaquil it happens more often than in Quito.
And be careful walking… sidewalks are full of obstacles.

The Pros and Cons of living in Ecuador. The Property. April 2015.

Property in Ecuador (pros):
Property taxes are much, much cheaper (than in USA). Association fees cheaper as well. In most apartment buildings you can have pets. You don't need heating or air conditioning (in Quito) - less bills to pay.
My North Quito apartment's YEARLY property tax is about $45 and association fee is $50 monthly
My Centro Historico Quito apartment's YEARLY property tax is about $20 and association fee is $15 monthly
Looting and arson is practically impossible in Quito. Apartment buildings, churches, houses, office buildings, etc, built with concrete (concrete will not burn) and are almost all fenced/walled. Sometimes there are electric fences, broken glass, metal spikes and other serious anti-climb measures on top of the fences and walls. Private armed security are everywhere: in the stores, apartment buildings, offices. Small businesses have metal gates or shutters over the doors and windows.

Property management companies in US exist to prohibit pretty much every activity regarding pets and kids, and they charge arm and leg for this oppression.

Here in Quito, when I go out during the day, I usually give our concierge my North Quito
(where I live) apartment's keys and she let out Sashka, my dog, to the roof terrace. I pay her $1 - $2 and everyone was happy.
The concierge of Centro Historico conjunto has my apartment keys on permanent basis. He does some maintenance in the apartment as needed.

Property in Ecuador (cons):
Cost of furnishing (electronics, furniture, appliances, bedding) is outrageous.
Home robberies are on the rise, although I believe that in a city like Quito less probability that your apartment will be robbed.
There is no illusion here in Ecuador that the police will protect private property. Everyone is responsible for their own safety.

The Pros and Cons of living in Ecuador. The Government. April 2015.

The Government in Ecuador (Pros):
Police force in Ecuador is not for reinforcing economical measures as it used in US. They are more like friendly presence unless there are protests. Police in Ecuador can be brutal dealing with protesters.
If police drive by and see food stand on street they might stop to eat there, not to ask about license to operate.

Ecuador has different criminal justice system than US. The United States system of case law and statutes based on English Common Law. Latin American(Ecuador included) system of law enforcement based on Napoleonic System. The difference: In Ecuador - no undercover operations, no asset seizures without charges against a person, the very act of committing a crime is the basic requirement for the initiation of prosecutorial action.

The Government in Ecuador (Cons):
Bureaucracy in Ecuador exploded after 2007, for example, Registro Civil used to have just a few customer service windows, now it has 63.
The law is dissimilar in Ecuador (see above) and legal matters you take for granted in USA don't exist, or played differently, or hard to comprehend, or not easy to get here.
The police force won't protect you and your private property in Ecuador: reporting petty crime to the police is useless.

The Pros and Cons of living in Ecuador. The Health Care. April 2015.

Health Care (Pros):
The doctor appointment is affordable, from $20(in hospital Voz Andes) to $40-$80 (hospital Metropolitano). Cost of lab tests and physiotherapy also not going to break your bank account.
Cost of dental cleaning is about $30 -$50, depends on dentist office.

Health Care (Cons):
Managing chronic Illness in Ecuador might be harder than in USA: language barrier, outside of the larger cities top notch medical care is not available, etc, etc..
You might have trouble finding a particular prescription medication that you need to take on a regular basis.
In Ecuador, doctors and hospitals expect payment at the time of service.

The Pros and Cons of living in Ecuador. The Weather. April 2015.

Weather in Ecuador (pros):
I only can talk about Quito's weather. It is perfect, for me anyway. There are no bugs or flies, the sun shines almost every morning and the temps are not freezing cold, not blazing hot.
Buildings in Quito: offices, houses, apartments buildings, are built using concrete and they don't have neither air-conditioning, nor heating, the flooring is mostly either laminated, hardwood or tiled. Oftentimes its colder inside than outside.

When you coming to Quito for extended period of time, to wonder around, to work, to study, whatever - make sure you pack warm lounging clothing, sweatpants, sweatshirts,  flannel pajamas and warm slippers - think about what you can sleep in rather than looking stylish. If you like to sleep with minimal clothing - pack electrical throw or blanket.

Here are my posts about weather in Quito.

Weather in Ecuador (cons):
You may discover that moving to altitude effects your health and not in a positive way: headaches, dizziness, insomnia, muscle twitching, edema, fatigue, and/or disorientation.
Live on the coast and the bugs, flies, fleas, and mosquitoes can be a challenge.
