Taxi dancers (dance partners for hire) available in Quito, Ecuador. December 2014.

A taxi dancer a dancing partner available for a fee.
quote from wiki
Taxi dancer is hired to dance with their customers. When taxi dancing first appeared in taxi-dance halls during early 20th-century America, male patrons would buy dance tickets for ten cents each. When a patron presented a ticket to a chosen taxi dancer, she would dance with him for the length of a single song. The taxi dancers would earn a commission on every dance ticket earned. Though taxi dancing has for the most part disappeared in the United States, it is still practiced in some other countries.

Services we use: excellent hairstylist in Quito. February 2013.

One Russian family moved to Quito in January 2012 and the wife, her name is Lina, is a fabulous hairdresser. She works at a high-end salon now. She does an awesome work cutting, styling and most important, coloring my hair the proper way, evenly and with nice highlights. Lina is way above others stylists that I tried in Quito. Lina's haircuts for men is amazing as well.
I bounced around to different hairstylists in Quito and none of them could do good color, they did coloring in patches, not evenly. They were professionals, working in salons, but still couldn't distribute the colour properly.
I personally don't like to go to the salons, so I invite Lina to do my hair at my house. I pay $15 for the haircut and few dollars for coming over. A man's haircut is $5 -$10, depending on a person's hair type.

Our Osterizer blender is used and abused and the base of the blender's jar finally broke.  I was in a panic.  This blender is Leo's lifeline. Sure, he can eat solid food now, but I still use the blender every day for making almond milk, smoothies, and vegetable dishes.
I called MegaKiwi where we bought this blender and asked for the Oster service number.
I have to say that we were impressed by this company's (Servicio Master Ecuador) customer service.  After verifying what brand and what type of blender we have they send us the part.  I called them at 2 p.m. the first time and at 5 p.m, the same day, we had the new part delivered to our apartment door!!!  The part itself cost us $5 and delivery was $4 (I gave the guy $5)

Amazing massage therapy in Quito. October 2011.

Every time I come to home to Quito from the USA I am in desperate need of a massage. This year when we went to La Clínica Quiropráctica del Dr. Edward M. Jarvis, http://dayinquito.blogspot.com/2011/08/chiropractor-services-in-quito-august.html   I noticed on the second floor there was a spa salon.

Dr. Jarvis  http://www.quitodolor.com/  assured me that the massage therapist, Tanya http://www.vidyaspa.com/#!contactos/c8gg  , has "a golden touch", so I decided to give it a try. I started to buy massages since I was in my 20s, I can tell the level of work done. She (Tanya) does have a talent to do massage. Her massage therapy is at a high level and gives me a feeling that I just returned from a refreshing sea-side vacation!  After the first session with her, I got hooked.

There are a few things that make this spa distinctive from all others:
Before my one hour full body massage I received a foot bath with rose petals and a foot massage.
Tanya does more than you ask or pay for. At my second massage session with her, in addition to deep tissue massage techniques, she used stones and her energy!!! It was amazing.

Services we use in Quito - Veterinary services and grooming for Sashka, the dog.

It was time to do grooming and visit the vet. We brought a dirty and hairy Sashka to the Veterinaria "San Alfonso" and received a manicured, lilly white dog in a few hours. The doctor also did a quick exam and gave Sashka a pill for parasites. The total bill:  $20.  Usually the doctor's visit is $12 and grooming is $14, but since we combined the visits, the vet gave us a discount.

Services we use in Quito - barber and hairdresser.

We still remember mental trauma of paying $20 for Leo's haircut and $125 for my color, highlights and haircut. It was in Minneapolis, spring of 2008.
When we lived in Centro Historico, at first, in 2008-2009, Leos haircut used to be 60 cents, as good as $20 in Mnpls! Later it went up to $1. Now, since we live in North Quito we have to splurge $2.50 (including tip) for his haircut.
As for mine , I have found a hairdresser, Roseo. She works in a high-end salon.
She wants her money right away and I want a deep discount, so after I appreciated her work at her salon(salon charged me $75 for color, highlights and haircut) - we made a deal. She now comes over to our home and does all of the above for $50 (or $10 for haircut only) cash in her hands, no third party intrusion.
Oh, and for her trouble coming over I tip her $2.

Services we use in Quito - medical pedicure

If you need a medical pedicure, have an in-grown toenail, warts, etc - you must visit Dr. Luis Penaranda, Podologo - Podiatrist - Foot Doctor. I tried a few other places but there is no comparison, he is the best I have ever tried. He sterilizes his tools after every procedure.
To avoid pain, one week before going to do a medical pedicure, put Vaseline on your feet every morning or night.
His shop is located on the first floor (basement) of the shopping center Unicornio (Local 103) across the road from CCI (Central Commercial Inaquito). Shop phone 2240-067.

Services we use in Quito - tailor. Part two.

I already wrote about our therapist: Dr. Andrei Rogozhin Sosa
http://www.centrodelaser.com/
He also does a good job removing moles, papilomas, etc. using laser technology.

I wrote about our favorite tailor shop as well: Magdalena Armijos. Shop phone 2271-471.
Last week I had an item to alter and we were not in the mood to go to CCI to our favorite tailor shop. We went to our neighborhood tailor instead, thinking - the task is so straight forward, they couldn't possibly screw it up. Boy, were we wrong!!! They(our neighborhood tailor) managed to screw it up anyway!!!
Never, ever again are we going to cheat on our favorite, precise, reliable tailor!!!!

Eyeglasses and Eyecare OR Cost of living in Quito Ecuador

There are a number of eye-care "Chains" here, the biggest being Optica Los Andes with 48 locations in the country. Two of these locations are in the El Recreo mall where we usually do our shopping.
A few weeks ago I decided to buy new glasses. Overall, it was positive expierience, except there were a few odd moments during the visual exam. They asked me to fill in a form with my name, age, etc..
The doctor told me - your vision didn't change since your last prescription but I will prescribe you ... (I didn't understand what) because you are old!!! I demanded to compare my old lenses with what he prescribed and I couldn't see through his "you are old lenses" Being a civilized (to the point) person, I didn't punch him for calling me old. I just politely asked him to leave my old prescription alone and make the same lenses.
Also, when I came over to receive my glasses I had a hard time to get a glasses case. I had to ask and press and insist.
Here is the cost:
Lenses: AKRON - UV protection, Anti-Reflex, Progressive $291.96
Frame: Tatoo $52.68
Sunglasses lenses: AKRON - UV protection, polarized $103.58
Sunglasses Frame: Urban $52.68
Subtotal $500.90
Tax 12% $60.11
Total $561.01

Services we use in Quito: tailor.

Today I would like to write about our tailor shop. There are a lot of tailor shops in Quito. In our Centro Historico La Ronda bario (neighborhood) I saw at least three tailor shops just within two blocks. Near our North Quito apartment, there are at least four..
Our tailor shop was recommended by my Russian friend.
Here are price samples: we had two flat sheets - made a duvet out of them, with buttons, cost - $12.  I had trousers which became too loose - $3 to make it fit tighter.
When we moved in to our North Quito condo, I bought fabric for the window coverings (there are a lot of fabric stores as well with huge selections). 2meters 40 cm wide, one meter cost $3.20. Quality - 50% polyester, 50% cotton. My tailor charged me $8 to make one window cover.
This tailor's prices are considered expensive, but we don't mind paying it because her work is precise and flawless.
Her shop is located on the third floor in the shopping center Unicornio across the road from CCI (Central Commercial Inaquito). Her name is Magdalena Armijos. Shop phone 2271-471.

P.S. This tailor shop went out of business in 2012.  Now, I use chain tailor shops "El Sastre". They have locations in almost every shopping mall, including El Condado.
